What Makes GRflex Different?

Why Use GRP and What Makes GRflex Different to Others?

Most GRP’s have many benefits for flat roofing, but they can also have some essential drawbacks.

If you’re a GRP roofer and been in the game for a while, you’ve probably seen your fair share of fibre glass systems. In this blog we will look at some of the faults associated with traditional GRP systems, why use GRP and what makes GRflex different.

Having a GRP system you can offer your clients can be a great way to win small, (typically) domestic flat roofing projects.

However, due to the essential drawbacks we’ll discuss in this blog, GRP typically can’t be used on large scale commercial projects -without the need for expansion joints. Which is a massive downfall.

The good news is you can still compete for these large-scale projects, using the same GRP system as you use for the small projects.

Don’t believe me?

The Fundamental Problem With GRP

Have you ever been called out to a job to fix a failing GRP roof? More than likely.

Like the rest of us you’ve probably seen GRP roofs that are flakier than the pastry topping on a warm Ginsters pie.

That’s because GRP dries rigid – and if you know anything about roofs, you’ll know roofs move. They expand and contract with the natural movement of the building. So, a rigid system on a roof? Well that probably just aint gonna cut the mustard now, is it.

That’s the main problem with GRP roofing systems and the reason the industry is seeing a massive change at the moment.

“GRP roofs have been used for more than 40 years…” you might be thinking, and you’d be right. But fibre glass roofs haven’t seen as much change in the last 40 years as they have in the last 5.

And trust me, in another 5 years’ time – the fibre glass roofing market is going to look very different.

Addressing the Problem

Here at GRflex, we recognise the issues that our industry faces. We’ve been on site to assess roofs that have split open, leaving a gaping hole the size of the Grand Canyon for water to penetrate.

We’ve seen roofs that have cracked as if it were paint, half-heartedly stroked over sand in the Sahara.

Basically, we’ve seen it all and although GRP has many benefits, the fact it dries rigid makes it less effective as a roofing system, and prone to failure.

Let me say that again.

Rigid GRP’s are less effective as a roofing system as they are prone to failure.

What Makes GRflex Different?

So, as a GRP manufacturer “what are we really getting at here?”, You might be asking.

Good question ol’ chum, and like the crack filler you’ve seen used to bodge that gaping roof hole back together, let me fill you in.

Unlike traditional GRP systems that typically use a hard curing resin primer and topcoat, along with a thick fibre glass reinforcement layer. GRflex has been formulated in a lab to the highest standards, using a Poly Methyl Methacrylate liquid which does not cure rigid.

It cures more like a rubber; therefore, it remains flexible once cured on a roof. GRflex also uses a much thinner (150gsm) fibre glass layer, making it all the more flexible when cured on a roof.

Having undergone all the necessary third-party industry standard testing including accelerated weather testing, UV testing, elongation testing, bond testing and fire testing. As well as our own lab testing, we are proud to have developed what is in our opinion the very first fully flexible GRP system.

A GRP that’s not like other GRPs.

Why Use GRflex

Apart from the obvious benefits that a flexible GRP presents, in that it will not crack, flake, split, saving you time and money on returning to site.

It also allows you to bid for larger, industrial, commercial projects at a more competitive rate. Because you will reduce your application time, reduce material costs, and overall increase your productivity.

In 5 years’ time it is our belief that you won’t see traditional, rigid GRPs so frequently in the market. The GRP world is making way for flexi fibres.

Save yourself the hassle of traditional GRP and become part of the next generation, now.
